City takes leadership role for new Aquatics Facility

15 August 2025

Since 2018, the City of Fort St. John has collaborated with the Peace River Regional District and the District of Taylor through the North Peace Leisure Facility Replacement Steering Committee to explore options for replacing the aging North Peace Leisure Pool, which is owned by the Peace River Regional District and operated by the City.

In July 2025, the City of Fort St. John gave notice of its departure from the Steering Committee. This decision reflects a strategic shift that will allow the City to take a more direct leadership role in advancing the replacement of the North Peace Leisure Pool.

“We remain fully committed to delivering a modern, inclusive, and accessible aquatic facility that meets the evolving needs of our community,” said Mayor Lilia Hansen. “This change enables us to focus our efforts and resources on moving the project forward, while continuing to provide excellent recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.”

Over the past several years, the Steering Committee has conducted extensive public engagement and early planning work. The insights gathered through this process have been invaluable in shaping a vision for the future of aquatic recreation in the North Peace region. The City will build on this foundation as it enters the next planning and development phase.

As part of its renewed approach, the City will:

  • Explore all partnership and funding opportunities
  • Review facility amenity options
  • Provide regular updates to our community
  • Continue to build on previous public engagement efforts

The City of Fort St. John thanks its regional partners for their collaboration to date and looks forward to continued dialogue as the project progresses.
